As we have discussed in our previous blog, The Benefits of Using CBD, we made a small mention on how CBD oil could help to reduce the effects of seizures and epilepsy.

Seizures occur when there’s a dramatic fluctuation of electrical activity in the brain. A number of high-profile cases have raised awareness in the past year of CBD’s anti-seizure properties, particularly the most recent mention from Gogglebox stars’ Steph and Dom as they discussed their son’s epilepsy.

However, it’s only recently that science has been able to confirm this link. A study was carried out and published in The New England Journal of Medicine to explore the effects of CBD on young adults with Davet Syndrome. The trial saw participants split, some receiving CBD while others received a placebo. The participants who received the CBD saw their seizures drop by around 38.9%.

In June 2018 a brand of CBD was approved in the US by the United States Food and Drug Administration to treat two specific forms of epilepsy; Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS) and Dravet Syndrome. These two disorders are extremely difficult to treat, however taking CBD alongside other anticonvulsant medications has shown to reduce the frequency and severity of seizures among those with the disorders.

How it works

Seizures occur from erratic electrical activity in the brain that can spread and cause uncontrolled physical movements or alterations of consciousness. Most anticonvulsants work by slowing down excitatory nerve activity in the brain, but LGS and Dravet syndrome may be treated with anticonvulsants that are not typically used for most types of epilepsy and often require two or more anticonvulsants.

Although at this moment it is not completely clear why CBD can reduce some types of seizures, but it is known to have a range of biochemical effects on nerve cells in the brain, and some of these biochemical interactions may have a relationship with the effect of CBD on seizures.

CBD is often seen as a controversial treatment due to it being one of the components of marijuana. There are strong opinions about marijuana and there will always be talks in regard to legalisation for medical uses, as well as recreational use. At this time, cannabidiol has been proven effective for only a few medical conditions. Due to the side effects, it is recommended to be used with caution and should be thoroughly.
